In August 2009, the DEAFNESS Forum launched Hearing Awareness Week. SafeToWork.com reported that the weeklong celebration “puts noise management on sonar.” In Australia, where the event was conceived, one in six citizens suffers from some form of hearing loss.

According to the Government of Western Australia, “Many [individuals] are frequently exposed for a long period of time to noise levels exceeding 85 dB(A), which is the level where noise control measures should be taken.”

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders explains that noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) can be caused by long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 decibels. “The louder the sound, the time period before NIHL can occur.” Common “sources of noise that can cause NIHL include motorcycles, firecrackers and small firearms, all emitting sounds from 120 to 150 decibels.”

In the U.S., “approximately 15 percent of Americans between the ages of 20 and 69-or 26 million Americans-have high frequency hearing loss that may have been caused by exposure to loud sounds or noise at work or in leisure activities.” The good news is, noise-induced hearing loss is 100% preventable. Other causes could include toxemia, diabetes during pregnancy, prematurity, Rh factor problems, or a lack of oxygen.

Acquired reasons are another possible cause of a child’s inability to hear. Problems like ear infections, drugs that damaged the auditory system, head injuries, exposure to noise, measles, mumps, chicken pox, the flu, encephalitis, and meningitis can all be acquired causes of a child losing their ability to hear.

If your child has gone through any of the above issues and you suspect that they do not hear as well as they should, then you would be wise to check into getting a test done to see if they can hear. If they cannot hear well then you may need to get them a hearing aid.

It might be difficult for a child to get a hearing aid especially if they are at the age where they tend to be self-conscious. You should insist upon them getting one if they need it though because without it their language skills and school skills will be lacking. Some kids may not have as much of a problem with it if not being able to hear has been affecting their social skills. There are aids that are less visible than others, but it will depend on the age of the child and the extent of the loss whether or not this type will work for them.
